Shade
Strictly, a colour made darker by adding black; loosely, any variety of a colour.
In colour theory a shade is a hue mixed with black. Navy is a shade of blue, maroon a shade of red. Shades are deeper and heavier than the pure hue. In ordinary speech the word is used much more freely, as in fifty shades of green, to mean any version of a colour, light or dark. Painters often avoid plain black for darkening, since it can deaden a colour, and use a dark blue, brown or the opposite hue instead. Tint, shade and tone together describe the three simple ways to alter a pure colour.
