Tone
A colour softened by adding grey, or more loosely the lightness of a colour.
Also: tonal colour
A tone is a hue mixed with grey, that is, with both black and white. Tones are quieter and more complex than pure hues; sage green and dusty rose are tones. Most colours in the natural world and in interior design are tones, not pure hues. The word has a second meaning. Photographers and painters use tone for how light or dark an area is, as in the tones of a black-and-white print, and speak of a tonal range from the deepest shadow to the brightest highlight.
