Tsvet
The Russian word for colour.
Also: цвет, tsveta
Tsvet means colour, and it is closely related to tsvetok, a flower, and to words for blossoming. Russian is often cited in studies of language and colour because it has two basic words where English has one: siniy for dark blue and goluboy for light blue, treated as different colours in the way English separates red from pink. The word for red, krasny, once also meant beautiful, which is the origin of the name Red Square. The botanist Mikhail Tsvet, whose surname means colour, invented chromatography, a way of separating plant pigments.
