Farbe
The German word for colour, which also means paint and dye.
Also: Farben
Farbe covers what English splits into colour, paint and dye, so a tin of paint and a shade of blue are both Farbe. It is a Germanic word, unrelated to the Latin color. German builds precise colour terms by joining words: Farbton is hue, literally colour tone, and himmelblau is sky blue. Germany has a central place in the history of colour. Goethe wrote a long study of how colours are experienced, published in 1810, and the country's chemical firms led the making of synthetic dyes in the late 19th century.
