Rang

Renk

The Turkish word for colour.

Also: renkli

Renk comes from the Persian rang and is a cousin of the Hindi and Urdu word. Renkli means colourful, and renksiz colourless. Turkish also has its own old colour words with interesting histories. Kara and siyah both mean black, the first native and the second borrowed, and ak and beyaz both mean white. Seas and regions were once named by colour for the points of the compass, which is one explanation given for the names of the Black Sea and the Red Sea. The word turquoise itself means Turkish in French.
