Lawn

The Arabic word for colour; its plural is alwan.

Also: لون, alwan

Lawn, pronounced roughly like the English word loan with a shorter vowel, is the standard Arabic word for colour. Its plural, alwan, also means kinds or varieties, as in many kinds of food. The Quran speaks of the differing colours of people, animals, fruits and mountains as signs for those who reflect. Arabic gave several colour words to other languages. Azure, crimson, saffron and lilac all reached Europe through Arabic, some of them from Persian or Sanskrit before that. It has nothing to do with the English word for grass or fine cotton.
