Rang
The word for colour in Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Punjabi, Bengali and many related languages.
Also: रंग, رنگ, rong
Rang came into the languages of northern India from Persian and is shared from Iran to Bangladesh. It means colour, and also dye and paint. It carries wider senses too: mood, manner, spirit and enjoyment. To say someone has taken on a rang is to say they have been changed by company or feeling. A rangrez is a dyer, rangoli is a floor design, and a call at Holi asks friends to come and be coloured. Sufi and devotional poetry use being dyed in the beloved's colour as an image of love. This guide takes its name from the word.
