Varna
A Sanskrit word for colour, also meaning outward appearance, a class of society and a letter or sound.
Also: वर्ण, varnam, banna
Varna is an old Sanskrit word with several meanings that grew from the idea of outward appearance. It means colour or complexion. It is the term for the four broad classes of society described in ancient texts. In grammar it means a letter or speech sound, so the alphabet is the garland of varnas. In music, a varnam is a type of composition in the Carnatic tradition. Many Indian languages keep the word or a form of it for colour, such as banna in Kannada and varnam in Malayalam and Telugu.
