The colours of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa

The new year of the Deccan is Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Marathi families raise a gudi at the window or door: a long bamboo pole draped with a bright silk cloth, usually yellow, green or saffron with a gold border, crowned with an upturned copper or silver pot and hung with neem leaves, mango leaves and a garland of red flowers and sugar sweets. It is read as a flag of victory. In the Telugu and Kannada states, doors are hung with strings of fresh green mango leaves and floors are drawn with rangoli. Women wear silk saris, in Maharashtra the nine-yard nauvari, often in green or purple. Processions with drums fill the streets.
