The colours of Anzac Day

Anzac Day marks the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and honours all who have served and died in war. It begins in the grey light before sunrise with the dawn service. In New Zealand the red poppy is the flower of this day, pinned to coats and laid at memorials. In Australia poppies are placed beside the names on the Roll of Honour, and many people also wear a sprig of green rosemary. Rosemary has stood for remembrance since ancient times, and it grows wild on the Gallipoli peninsula. Veterans march in dark suits with rows of medals on bright striped ribbons. Wreaths of red, green and white are laid.
