The lemon town
Menton
The last French town before Italy, with an old quarter in ochre and yellow and a famous lemon festival.

Why Menton is lemon yellow
Menton lies on the French Riviera at the Italian border. Sheltered by mountains, it has one of the mildest climates in France, and lemons have been grown on its terraces for centuries. The Menton lemon is bright yellow, fragrant and mild, and its name is legally protected. Each February since the 1930s the town has held a lemon festival, with large sculptures and parade floats built from many tonnes of lemons and oranges. The old town rises from the harbour in tall houses painted ochre, yellow, apricot and rose, in the Ligurian manner, below a Baroque church. From the sea wall, the whole hillside looks like a warm colour chart.
Values are fair approximations of what the eye sees there, not measurements.
