City of flowered patios
Córdoba
White courtyards hung with blue pots of red geraniums, and a great mosque of red-and-white striped arches.

Why Córdoba is geranium red
Córdoba, in southern Spain, was the capital of Muslim Spain a thousand years ago. Its old houses turn inward to a patio, an open courtyard that keeps the home cool. Residents cover the white walls from ground to roof with flowerpots, often painted blue, filled with red and pink geraniums, carnations and jasmine. Each May a festival opens the patios to visitors and gives prizes to the best. UNESCO listed the festival as intangible cultural heritage in 2012. The city's other famous pattern is in the Mosque-Cathedral, begun in the 8th century. Its hall holds hundreds of double arches built of alternating red brick and pale stone, so the stripes repeat as far as the eye can see.
Values are fair approximations of what the eye sees there, not measurements.
