Yanse

The usual Mandarin Chinese word for colour.

Also: 颜色, yánsè, se

Yanse is written with two characters. The first, yan, means face or countenance. The second, se, is the older single word for colour and also means look, expression and, in Buddhist texts, the visible world of form. Chinese colour names are often built by adding se to a noun, so that orange is the colour of the orange fruit and brown is coffee colour. The old term qing covers a range from green through blue to black, depending on what it describes. Colours carry strong meanings, with red for luck and joy.
