Saek

The Korean word for colour.

Also: 색, saekkkal

Saek is the Korean reading of the Chinese character for colour, and it appears in many compounds: obangsaek, the five-direction colours, and saekdong, the many-coloured stripes on festive sleeves. In everyday speech people often say saekkkal. Korean is known for its rich range of colour adjectives. The native words for the basic colours can be altered with different vowels and endings to express subtle differences, so that there are many ways to say yellowish or reddish. As in Japanese, the traditional word pureun covers both blue and green.
