Shibori
A family of Japanese resist-dye methods using binding, stitching, folding, clamping and twisting.
Also: Japanese tie-dye
Shibori is a Japanese word for dyeing cloth after shaping it. There are many named methods. Cloth may be bound in tiny points, stitched and gathered, folded and clamped between boards, or wrapped around a pole and pushed into pleats. Each gives a different pattern, often with soft, blurred edges. Indigo on white cotton is the classic combination. The town of Arimatsu, near Nagoya, has specialised in it since the early 17th century. The word is now used worldwide for craft dyeing of this kind.
