Resist dyeing
Any method of making patterns by blocking dye from parts of the cloth or yarn.
Also: resist
In resist dyeing, some areas are protected so that dye cannot reach them. The protection can be wax, as in batik; a paste of mud, starch or gum, as in Indian dabu and Nigerian adire; tight binding or stitching, as in bandhani and shibori; or tying the yarn before it is woven, as in ikat. After dyeing, the resist is removed and the pattern appears in the original colour. Repeating the process with different colours builds up complex designs. Versions of it arose separately in many parts of the world.
