Purpure
The heraldic name for purple, a rare tincture.
Also: purple (heraldry)
Purpure is the least common of the main heraldic colours. In the Middle Ages it was sometimes treated as a doubtful colour, and its shade varied from grey-violet to reddish purple. It appears in a few old arms, such as the purple lion of the Spanish kingdom of León. In uncoloured drawings it is shown by diagonal lines from upper right to lower left. Very few national flags contain purple; the dye was long too costly for cloth meant to fly outdoors.
