Pantone
A commercial system of numbered colours used worldwide to specify exact inks and dyes.
Also: PMS, Pantone Matching System
Pantone is an American company that publishes numbered colour guides. Its matching system, introduced in 1963, gave designers and printers in different places a shared reference: name the number, and the printer mixes the ink to the published recipe. It became the common language for spot colours, and separate ranges exist for textiles and plastics. Many organisations define their logo or flag colours by Pantone number. The company also announces a Colour of the Year, a marketing exercise that has run since 2000. Its guides are proprietary and must be bought.
