A colour with little or no hue, such as white, grey, black, beige or taupe.

Strictly, neutrals are white, black and grey, which have no hue. In design the word also covers near-neutrals with only a hint of colour: cream, beige, taupe, stone, charcoal, and sometimes navy and brown. Neutrals form the background of most schemes because they do not compete with stronger colours. They are less simple than they look. Nearly every neutral leans slightly warm or cool, and two that look alike on a card may clash at full size. In photography, a neutral grey card is used to set correct exposure.
