Neon
An extremely bright, glowing colour; originally the light of gas-filled glass tube signs.
Also: neon colour, fluorescent colour, day-glo
Neon signs are glass tubes filled with gas that glows when electricity passes through. Pure neon gas gives orange-red; other gases and coated tubes give blues, greens and pinks. The signs lit city streets from the 1920s, and are especially tied to places such as Hong Kong, Tokyo and Las Vegas. By extension, neon now describes any colour that seems to glow, such as highlighter yellow and hot pink. In fabrics and inks these are fluorescent dyes, which turn invisible ultraviolet into visible light.
