Jewel tone
A deep, rich, saturated colour named after a gemstone, such as emerald or ruby.
Also: jewel colours, gem colours
Jewel tones are strong colours of medium to dark value: emerald green, sapphire blue, ruby red, amethyst purple, topaz yellow, garnet. They are saturated without being bright in the way of neon, and they look especially good in materials with shine, such as silk, velvet and glazed tile. Much Indian festive and wedding dress uses jewel tones with gold. In interiors they are used for a warm, enclosed mood. The term is a loose one from fashion and decoration, not a technical category.
