Gamut
The full range of colours that a device, ink set or system can produce.
Also: colour gamut
No screen, printer or paint box can show every colour the eye can see. The set it can show is its gamut. A phone screen can display glowing greens that printing inks cannot match; some inks give deep cyans a basic screen cannot reach. A colour outside the range is said to be out of gamut and must be replaced by the nearest available one. The word once meant the full range of musical notes. Wider gamuts need purer primary colours, which is one aim of newer display technology.
