Delta E
A single number for how different two colours look; around 1 is roughly the smallest visible difference.
Also: ΔE, colour difference
Delta E measures the distance between two colours in a space such as Lab. Zero means identical. A value near 1 is about the smallest difference a careful viewer can see side by side; below 2 or 3 is usually good enough for print and paint matching; above 5 is plain to anyone. There are several formulas. The first, from 1976, is simple distance. Later ones, from 1994 and 2000, correct for the fact that the eye is fussier about some colours than others. Factories use it to accept or reject batches.
