Dark mode
A display setting that shows light text on a dark background instead of dark on light.

Dark mode reverses the usual scheme of a screen. Many people find it more comfortable in dim rooms, and on screens where each pixel makes its own light it can save some battery power. Designing one is not a matter of simply swapping black and white. Pure white text on pure black can seem to glare, so designers use dark greys and off-whites, and soften bright colours, which look stronger against dark backgrounds. Claims that dark mode is better for the eyes in general are not firmly established.
