Cor
The Portuguese word for colour.
Also: cores, color (Spanish)
Cor comes from the Latin color and is a feminine noun: a cor, plural as cores. Spanish keeps the fuller form color, and Italian has colore. Portuguese has some distinctive colour words. Brazil takes its name from brazilwood, pau-brasil, a tree whose wood gave a red dye and whose name comes from brasa, a glowing ember. Vermelho, the usual word for red, goes back to a Latin word for a little worm, after the insects once used for red dye. The phrase de cor, meaning by heart, is unrelated and comes from the Latin for heart.
