Fine florals on white
Sanganer
A printing town on the edge of Jaipur, known for delicate flower motifs on a white ground.
Why Sanganer is printer's white
Sanganer, now part of greater Jaipur, has printed cloth by hand since at least the 17th century. Its style is the opposite of nearby Bagru. Sanganeri prints are placed on a white or very pale ground, and the motifs are small and fine: sprigs, buds and flowers called butis, each outlined in black and filled with red, with other colours added by further blocks. Printers work at long padded tables, lining up each block by eye. The town supplied the Jaipur court and later the export trade. It is also known for handmade paper. Modern screen printing and synthetic dyes are now common here, alongside workshops that keep the hand-block method.
Values are fair approximations of what the eye sees there, not measurements.
