Mehndi
The art of decorating hands and feet with henna paste, especially for weddings and festivals.
Also: mehendi, henna art
Mehndi is both the Hindi and Urdu name for henna and the practice of drawing with it. A cone of paste is used to pipe fine patterns of flowers, vines, paisleys and nets on the palms, backs of the hands and feet. The paste is left for some hours, then flakes off, leaving an orange stain that darkens to red-brown over two days and lasts a week or two. A night of mehndi is part of weddings in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is also applied for Eid, Karva Chauth, Teej and Diwali.
