Kente colours
The colours of kente, the strip-woven ceremonial cloth of Ghana, each with a commonly given meaning.
Also: kente
Kente is woven by Asante and Ewe weavers in Ghana and Togo in narrow strips that are sewn together. Asante kente was once made for royalty. Weavers and sellers commonly explain the colours like this: gold or yellow for wealth and royalty, green for growth and harvest, red for blood, sacrifice and political struggle, blue for peace and harmony, black for maturity and the ancestors, white for purity and celebration. The patterns have names too, often proverbs. Such readings are widely shared, though they are a guide and not a strict code.
