Gules

The heraldic name for red.

Also: red (heraldry)

Gules is the red of coats of arms, and one of the most common tinctures. The origin of the word is debated; it is often traced to an Old French word for throat or for red-dyed fur collars. In uncoloured drawings gules is shown by vertical lines. Any bright red will do, from scarlet to crimson. Many flags with red fields or stripes descend from arms with gules, among them those of England, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria.
