Bindi
A dot or small ornament worn on the forehead between the eyebrows, mainly by women in South Asia.
Also: pottu, tikli, bottu
The bindi takes its name from the Sanskrit for a drop or point. Traditionally it is a round red dot of kumkum. The spot between the eyebrows is regarded in Hindu thought as a seat of inner sight. In many communities a red bindi signals a married woman, while girls and unmarried women may wear other colours, though customs differ by region. Today most bindis are small felt or jewelled stickers in every colour and shape, worn as decoration by women of many faiths.
