The Golden City of red roofs
Prague
A sea of red tiled roofs, blackened stone towers and Baroque fronts in ochre, pink and green.
Why Prague is roof red
Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is known as the Golden City and the City of a Hundred Spires. Seen from the castle hill, its old quarters are a spread of red clay roof tiles, broken by towers and green copper domes. Where the gold comes from is debated: some point to gilded roofs and tower tips, others to the way sandstone glows at sunset. That sandstone has darkened to near black on the Charles Bridge and the Gothic churches. House fronts are plastered and painted in Baroque colours, ochre yellow, pink and pale green. Some carry sgraffito, a pattern made by scratching through a pale layer of plaster to a dark one beneath.
Values are fair approximations of what the eye sees there, not measurements.
