Caminito, the painted alley
La Boca
A dockside quarter of Buenos Aires where houses of wood and corrugated iron are painted in blocks of colour.

Why La Boca is boca blue
La Boca lies at the mouth of the Riachuelo river in Buenos Aires. In the late 19th century it filled with immigrants, many from Genoa in Italy, who worked in the docks. They built shared houses of timber and corrugated iron, and are said to have painted them with whatever paint was left over from the ships, which is why one wall might carry three colours. In the 1950s the local painter Benito Quinquela Martín led the turning of a disused railway alley into Caminito, an open-air street museum with boldly painted fronts. It opened in 1959. The district is also home to the football club Boca Juniors, whose colours are blue and yellow.
Values are fair approximations of what the eye sees there, not measurements.
