White walls, painted murals
Asilah
A whitewashed Atlantic town where artists paint new murals on the medina walls each summer.

Why Asilah is medina white
Asilah is a small fortified town on Morocco's Atlantic coast, south of Tangier. Its sea walls were built by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Inside them, the houses of the medina are whitewashed, with doors, window grilles and the lower part of walls painted blue or green. Since 1978 the town has held an arts festival each summer. Invited artists from Morocco and abroad paint murals directly on the white walls, and these stay until they are painted over for the next round. The festival was started by local people to revive a run-down town, and it led to restored streets and houses. Out of season, Asilah is quiet, bright and clean.
